Pale Scratches And Overlapping Letters On A Dark Wall

The density of this marked wall made me stop while moving through Buenos Aires. Letters, angular shapes, and fine scratches overlapped across a dark surface, leaving very little space untouched. I photographed the detail in 2011, keeping the frame close so the surrounding street would fall away. What interested me was the accumulation of lines, with each mark contributing to a pattern that never quite settled into one clear subject.

Some scratches are broad and bright, cutting across thinner lettering underneath. Others are barely visible until I look more closely. Triangular shapes and larger letter forms interrupt the finer network, giving the eye temporary places to rest. The vertical composition holds those different scales together, from the largest pale strokes to the smallest scratches near the edges. I like how the marks can appear almost abstract at first, then become more recognizably connected to writing as individual letters emerge.

Black and white gives the wall a strong graphic presence. The lighter lines stand against the dark ground, while softer grey areas keep the surface from feeling flat. I wanted the photograph to retain that texture rather than turn the marks into a clean design. It is the irregularity that keeps me looking: lines cross, shapes repeat imperfectly, and familiar forms disappear into the next layer. As graffiti wall art, the image brings an intricate urban pattern to a modern room or studio. Its contrast reads clearly from a distance, while the smaller marks offer a much more detailed view up close.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
