White Columns and Clock Faces Beneath a Deep Blue Sky
The clock dome of Kingston City Hall rises into a clear blue sky in this architectural photograph. I took an upward view, bringing the pale columns, dark roof, and clock faces together above the building’s angled roofline. The open sky gives the tower’s outline room to remain clear, from the larger rounded dome to the fine weather vane at its top.
Two clock faces are visible, each set within a pale decorative surround. Their dark numerals and hands introduce a more graphic detail against the softer tones of the roof. Below them, tall windows and slender columns repeat around the curved structure. I like how those upright lines support the dome’s broader shape, giving the photograph both a strong silhouette and smaller features to explore.
The roofline crosses the lower right on a diagonal, with repeated projecting blocks casting small shadows beneath its edge. That angle leads the eye toward the tower, while stonework and a short chimney provide another scale of detail closer to the camera. Light makes the pale surfaces stand out against the sky without removing their texture.
I wanted to preserve this particular relationship between the City Hall’s structure and the space around it. The close framing leaves the wider street outside the photograph, so attention stays on the clocks, columns, and changing shapes above the roof. Made in 2012, the image records a recognisable piece of Kingston architecture through its carefully observed upper details.
