Lanterns and Festive Lights Reflect Along Stone Paving
The lane is quiet, but the lights give it a lively pattern. Lanterns project from Dubrovnik’s stone walls, and garlands with glowing round ornaments cross the space overhead. I photographed this Old Town street at dusk in 2020, when the illumination stood out clearly against the darker sky and enclosed facades.
A bright lantern near the left edge provides an immediate point of interest. Beyond it, smaller lights repeat down the lane, becoming closer together as the view narrows. The festive decorations add curved shapes between the buildings, contrasting with the upright walls and rectangular paving. I kept the foreground open so the stone surface could lead naturally toward those farther lights. Their reflections form a broken bright line along the street, giving the lower part of the photograph its own rhythm.
In black and white, the different textures remain distinct: rougher stone blocks on the nearer wall, smoother doorway surrounds, and the patterned paving below. Dark openings create pauses among the lighter surfaces. What I like most is the balance between that solid architecture and the smaller points of light suspended within it. This print offers a Dubrovnik scene with a quiet evening atmosphere and a seasonal touch. It can appeal to someone who enjoys old European streets, travel memories, or monochrome architecture, with the long perspective inviting the eye deeper into the lane each time the image is revisited.
