Weathered Gold Guardian Against Cracked Red Paint
I photographed this ancient guardian door knocker in Ulanbatar, Mongolia, after the combination of weathered metal, cracked red paint, and worn plaster stopped me in my tracks. The image belongs naturally among my Mongolia photography wall art, but what held my attention was not simply the location. It was the evidence of age. Every scrape, stain, fracture, and softened edge suggested years of use and exposure, while the heavy circular ring still appeared solid and purposeful.
The principal subject is an ornate metal face mounted on a vivid red door. Its broad eyes, curled brows, rounded nose, stylized mouth, and surrounding decorative scrollwork give the knocker the appearance of a guardian or protective figure. Traces of gold remain across the face, while darker green and blackened areas reveal oxidation, accumulated grime, and the gradual wearing away of the original finish. The thick iron ring hangs below the face, adding weight and a sense of function to the design.
I was equally attracted to the structure around it. A vertical strip of warm ivory plaster runs down the left side of the frame, creating a strong division against the larger red surface. That pale wall is marked by scratches, stains, rough brushwork, and uneven patches, while the door carries a dense network of fine cracks and faded areas. The photograph becomes more than a close view of an ornament. It is also a study of architecture, color, material, and time.
Within my door wall art photography, this image stands apart because the composition depends on both the knocker and the surrounding negative space. The guardian sits slightly right of center, allowing the red field and ivory wall to create visual tension rather than enclosing the subject in a predictable symmetrical frame. From across a room, the photograph reads immediately through its bold red, gold, and neutral color blocks. At closer range, the small details begin to emerge: the worn eyes, green patina, hairline paint fractures, metal scratches, and irregular plaster texture.
I see this photograph working particularly well in an entryway, study, library, dining room, or any interior where strong color and aged architectural detail can become a focal point. It would also suit collectors drawn to Mongolia, Asian decorative arts, historic doors, guardian figures, weathered surfaces, or richly textured red wall art. The image has enough graphic strength for a contemporary space, yet the subject itself feels ancient and timeworn.
Each Limited Edition of 10 print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. I produce the photograph with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the deep red surface, aged gold metal, muted green patina, and subtle tonal changes in the pale plaster.
This photograph also belongs with my ancient wall art photography, where age, craftsmanship, and surviving surface detail become the central subject.

Limited Edition of 10
This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
