Forbidden City Carved Wooden Doorway Beijing Architectural Photography

Geometric Carving and Pale Curtains Within Red Palace Walls

I photographed this wooden doorway in Beijing’s Forbidden City, taking a nearly frontal view so its balanced arrangement would remain clear. Deep red walls frame the entrance, while pale curtains fill the upper sections and intricate carving covers the lower panels. The photograph brings those different surfaces together in a quiet architectural study.

The doorway’s centre is more closely divided than its outer sections. Narrow upright frames surround the doors, and smaller panels sit above them. At either side, broader curtained areas provide a simpler rhythm. I like how those changes give the symmetry some variety, letting the eye move inward without making every part of the entrance look the same.

Across the lower woodwork, small geometric lines repeat in dense patterns. Their dark recesses contrast with the softer vertical folds above. Weathering adds fine differences to the wood’s colour, while greenish and muted warm tones remain around some of the edges. The red wall holds the entire arrangement within a strong, uncomplicated border.

Stone paving and a shallow step give the doorway a base. Above it, a strip of painted decoration introduces another layer of detail without taking over the frame. I wanted enough of those surroundings to show the entrance as part of the palace architecture, while keeping the carved panels as the main subject. For me, its appeal lies in that meeting of formal design and visibly varied surfaces, where careful repetition rewards a closer look.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
