A Bold Painted Face Above Pale Yellow Plaster in Havana
Two red eyes stare out from a loosely painted alien face on a Havana wall. I found this unusual street artwork in 2017 and photographed it close, keeping the peach-coloured surface, dark lines and pale yellow lower wall in the vertical frame. The mural’s strong features provide an immediate subject, while the weathered finish gives the image another layer of detail.
The face is built from broad black strokes and more delicate crossing marks. Red fills the eyes, yellow patches appear near the sides, and cooler blue-grey shapes gather around the centre. Paint drips continue below several lines. The uneven surface interrupts those colours with pale chips and exposed rough areas, so the image never feels like a clean graphic placed on an empty background.
I kept the quieter wall below the mural visible. Its broad yellow area gives the eye a pause after the busy painted section above and makes the large face feel more concentrated. A rough horizontal strip near the top adds another boundary within the artwork, while the small marks around it keep the composition active.
What appealed to me was the surprise of finding such an outlandish subject within an ordinary facade. The photograph preserves that encounter through specific colour and texture: bright red eyes, gestural black paint and worn plaster. For someone drawn to quirky urban photography and bold street art, this image offers a distinctive Havana detail. It reads clearly from a distance, then reveals more of the scratched, chipped and dripping surface with a closer look.
