A Yellow Painted Face Emerges Through Worn Plaster
A painted face emerges from a worn wall in Willemstad, Curaçao, with bright yellow patches still visible around its eyes, nose, and mouth. I found this mural in a quieter lane and photographed it in 2023. The colour image holds the portrait within a much larger field of cracked plaster, faded paint, and overlapping graffiti.
The face does not dominate through size alone. Its dark contours and small areas of yellow stand out because so much of the surrounding surface is pale and subdued. Parts of the portrait have faded into the wall, leaving the expression fragmented. That partial visibility is what first drew me to it.
Other marks cross and surround the image: red strokes above the forehead, black lettering to the side, and faint shapes near the ground. A long horizontal band runs behind the portrait, while cracks travel down through the plaster. I see these as layers within the photograph rather than clues to an account I can confidently reconstruct.
Keeping a wider portion of the wall in view gives the face its particular presence. It appears within the street’s worn surfaces, not as a cleanly separated artwork. The restrained cream and grey tones make the yellow feel more concentrated, and the texture remains readable across the frame. For someone drawn to urban photography with an understated palette, this view offers a close encounter with a small piece of Willemstad’s street life.
