Curtained Windows Behind Worn Railings and Broken Floorboards
The porch remains full of small details: worn chairs, loose boards, a narrow railing and pale curtains behind the windows. At the centre, a glass panelled door gives the frontage a clear point of balance. I photographed this abandoned Route 66 roadside stop in 2022. Its weathered surfaces and closely spaced furnishings drew my attention, making the porch an absorbing subject within the larger building.
Two broad windows sit on either side of the door. Their dark frames divide the lighter curtains into rectangles, with small reflections appearing across the glass. I like how this regular arrangement holds together above the less orderly porch. The railing crosses the frame in a long horizontal line, while its narrow supports interrupt the view at intervals.
Below, the floorboards are split and uneven. A plain wooden chair on the left faces outward, and a damaged upholstered seat occupies the right. Loose timber and other fragments gather near their bases, creating a denser texture along the lower edge. The front beam shows deep grain and worn surfaces, with darker ground visible beneath it.
Black and white connects the pale curtains, rough wood and faded upholstery through a range of greys. The photograph invites a close look at an everyday roadside structure shaped by disuse, with the doorway and paired windows giving it a strong architectural centre. As a print, it offers a detailed Americana subject for someone drawn to abandoned porches, old roadside buildings and weathered rural interiors.
