Exterior Loading Ladder On Abandoned Saskatchewan Farm Elevator

This photograph was made at an abandoned prairie farm in southeastern Saskatchewan, where the grain elevator still stands long after the work that once passed through it has stopped. From a distance, it reads as little more than a wooden wall rising out of prairie grass, but up close, the logic of its former use becomes unmistakable. The narrow steel ladder climbs toward a service window cut directly into the siding, feeding into a loading chute that once carried grain inward toward interior conveyors.

The structure itself is beginning to give in to time. Horizontal boards have shifted through decades of prairie winters, the door below now sealed by disuse rather than intent. Grass grows thick where machinery once stood, and the metal rails that frame the ladder are worn smooth from repeated handling. The chute leads inward into darkness now, no longer part of a working system but a remnant of one.

I came across this site during a roadside stop while exploring the prairie backroads and walked through waist-high grass toward the loading side of the building. The ladder revealed itself to be loosely mounted in places, its footing uncertain after years of abandonment. This photograph was made on location as part of that field exploration. Each print is personally signed and includes a certificate of authenticity.

Printed on archival pigment paper with archival pigment inks, the tonal range of this black-and-white image preserves the contrast between aged wood siding, galvanized steel, and prairie growth. What remains is less a document of agriculture than a study in intersecting planes — diagonal ladder against horizontal siding, geometry overtaken by organic foreground movement.
