A Small Brick House Beneath an Expansive Sky
Seen across a broad field, this abandoned Ontario farmhouse occupies a surprisingly small part of the landscape. I photographed it with the surrounding trees and open sky intact, letting the distance become part of the image. The grass stretches across the foreground in bands of light and dark, while the house sits near the tree line with its steep roof and front porch still clearly recognizable.
The building catches my eye because its precise shapes break into the softer forms around it. Pale window surrounds, pointed rooflines and the porch stand against a dense cluster of leaves. The trees rise above the house and extend along either side, giving the setting a sheltered quality despite the openness of the field. Above them, scattered clouds provide another layer of texture. In monochrome, the difference between the grass, foliage and brick becomes a pattern of tones rather than a competition between colours.
I find this wider view especially appealing for the balance it gives an abandoned subject. The farmhouse is the point of interest, but the land around it has equal presence. Your eye can travel through the field, settle on the building and return to the sky. As a rural landscape for a wall, it offers a quiet view of Ontario with architectural detail at its centre and enough open space to keep the scene feeling spacious.
