A Restaurant Corner Worth Stopping For
A short walk from Asakusa’s temple grounds, I found this corner restaurant with its shutters closed. The building gave me plenty to photograph before anyone entered the scene: painted figures across the shutters, signs rising above the roofline, and tiled eaves joining the two sides of the facade.
I worked from the corner so both streets could lead into the picture. The tall post in front adds another upright shape, while the railings and shutter slats carry the eye across the building. Black and white brings those patterns together. The pale panels stand apart from the darker timber without losing the smaller details.
I would slow down on these side streets. A closed shop can offer as much to photograph as a busy one, especially when its shutters become part of the picture.
This photograph records the corner as I found it. Open shutters, parked bicycles or passing people can change the composition on another visit. I would use the map to find the area, then look at what is actually happening in front of me.
More photographs from these walks are in my Tokyo photography collection. For a different approach to signs and street life after dark, see my Shinjuku neon district photography location.
