Yellow Eyes Above Layered Feathers and Small Green Leaves
Two bright yellow eyes give this portrait its immediate focus. I photographed the martial eagle in Tanzania’s Serengeti in 2023, watching it perched among thorny branches. Its body angles across the frame, while the turned head brings the face towards the camera. That small change in direction makes the bird feel particularly present within the surrounding pale space.
The feathers overlap in a dense pattern of brown and grey, with lighter areas along the wing and chest. I like how those broad layers contrast with the fine branches beneath them. The feet sit among the twigs, and small green leaves introduce a fresh colour against the darker plumage.
The background is soft and nearly even in tone. It gives the bird’s head, beak and tail a clear outline, leaving room around the perched figure. The yellow eyes remain the strongest points of colour, drawing attention back to the face after the eye has explored the feathers and branches.
My interest in this encounter came from watching the eagle in its setting and allowing the moment to unfold. For me, the finished photograph holds both a detailed bird portrait and the texture of the branch on which it rests. As a colour wildlife print, it offers an understated view of the Serengeti, with a direct gaze and carefully visible feather detail that reward closer inspection.
