Tall Mountain Trees Above a Snow Streaked Ridge
A cluster of tall evergreens stands above a broad mountain landscape in this black and white photograph of the Rocky Mountains. Snow traces the distant ridges, small clouds cross the sky, and rocky ground fills the foreground. The trees give the scene a close, tangible subject against the more distant mountain forms.
I placed the largest group near the centre, where their narrow tops rise well above the skyline. Their branches make a dense, textured shape, quite different from the smoother sky behind them. Smaller trees continue down the slope at the right, helping the view move naturally from the foreground into the wider landscape.
Beyond them, the mountains open into several layers. Dark forest covers lower slopes, while brighter snow marks the folds and ledges above. Those changing tones make the distance readable without taking attention away from the nearby trees. The scattered clouds add small light shapes that echo the snow below.
I photographed the scene in 2011. What holds my interest is the relationship between the upright trees and the long, uneven ridge behind them. Monochrome makes that contrast especially clear, while retaining the bark, branches, and rough ground that give the image its detail. This mountain print offers both the scale of a distant range and the more intimate character of a few trees growing on its slopes.
