Haliburton Snow Laden Woodland Winter Nature Photograph
Bowed Branches Beside a Pale Track Through the Trees
White reaches almost everywhere in this Haliburton woodland. It covers the ground, follows the larger trunks and hangs along small branches until they bend toward the snow below. I wanted to show how thoroughly a snowfall can change the shape of a familiar forest.
A faint track enters from the lower left, leaving an open patch of ground beside the densely covered trees. The right side is much closer and more detailed, with long branches extending into the view. Farther back, smaller trees form rounded, drooping shapes beneath a light sky. Those different distances keep the pale scene from becoming flat.
The dark bark is easy to overlook at first, but it does important work. A few exposed trunks and narrow branch edges give the snow its outline and help the eye follow the woodland structure. I find that balance especially appealing: most of the photograph is soft and white, yet the remaining dark lines make the weight and direction of the branches clear.
I photographed this winter scene in 2010 in Haliburton, Ontario. The interest lies in the whole transformation rather than a single isolated tree. The snow connects many separate branches into larger forms, while the track still offers a route through them. For someone who enjoys quiet winter nature photographs, it is a view to look into slowly, finding the forest’s familiar shapes inside an unusually complete covering of snow.
