A Broad Curve Between Dark Water and Woodland
A road bends around the snowy hillside in a long, open curve before narrowing toward the mountains. That line anchors this aerial photograph I made in Norway in 2023. Dark water borders the right edge, another stretch of water lies farther away on the left, and patches of woodland interrupt the pale ground. The view brings several parts of the winter landscape into one clear arrangement.
From above, the road becomes a shape as much as a route. I enjoy following its sweep from the lower foreground into the centre of the picture, where it begins to blend with the smaller marks across the hills. Trees create dense dark clusters alongside finer, scattered lines. Snow smooths some surfaces while exposing the structure of others, giving the terrain an almost drawn quality.
The distant peaks complete that movement through the image. They rise in a broken sequence below a soft, cloud covered sky, with snow picking out ridges and rocky faces. Black and white links their textures with the hillside in front of them. The darker water supplies a broad area of contrast, allowing the smaller details of road, trees and shore to stay legible.
This photograph offers the pleasure of tracing a landscape slowly. Its sweeping road makes an immediate impression, then the woodland patterns and separate bodies of water reveal the geography in more detail. I see it as a natural choice for a study, hallway or living room where a northern winter view can add light, depth and a gentle sense of distance.
