A Lioness’s Face Within a Field of Stems
At first, the grasses took up nearly all my attention. Their overlapping stems filled the view, and the lioness was difficult to separate from them. Then her face became clear within the tangle. I photographed this moment in the Serengeti in Tanzania, watching until her eyes and the shape of her head gave me enough of a subject to work with. I wanted to keep the grasses in the image because they were essential to how I first saw her.
Her head sits toward the right side of the frame, below a darker band in the vegetation. Pale stems cross in front of her face and continue through the foreground. The ears and eyes remain visible between those lines, while much of her body disappears into the growth. Above her, the grass becomes a softer field of texture. I left a broad area of it around the head, allowing the photograph to retain the feeling of searching through a landscape rather than immediately finding an isolated animal.
Black and white makes that relationship especially subtle. The lioness and the surrounding stems share many of the same tones, so the face emerges gradually through its shape and small contrasts. I remember paying close attention to those openings in the grass. The finished image asks for a similar kind of looking: the eye moves through the stems before settling on her gaze. For me, the photograph holds the moment of noticing, with the Serengeti vegetation still occupying most of what I could see.
