Three Elephants Together Beneath an Open Serengeti Sky
I can spend hours watching elephants move through the Serengeti. During this visit in Tanzania, the sight of a calf beside two adults gave me a particularly memorable photograph. They stayed close together as they walked and grazed through the long grass. I chose a square frame that kept their overlapping forms in the lower part of the image, with the open plain and sky extending beyond them.
The nearest adult fills the right side, while the calf occupies the lower left and another adult stands farther behind. Their positions make the difference in size easy to see without separating the smaller animal from the group. I liked how the broad ears and rounded bodies contrast with the fine stems around their legs. Tusks and trunks add curved lines within those larger forms, while the skin texture provides detail across the elephants themselves. The distant horizon remains simple, with a small tree giving a point of scale beyond the grass.
Black and white keeps the photograph centred on those relationships of shape, texture, and distance. The elephants hold a strong presence, but the space above them allows the scene to remain open. I wanted the image to show the animals within the plain I was watching, rather than make the surroundings disappear. For a living room, study, or space with an interest in African wildlife, it offers a calm view of the Serengeti. The group is readable at a distance, and a closer look reveals the folds of ears, rough skin, and vegetation that give the encounter its detail.
