A Small Black Bear Against Soft Yellow-Green Woodland Light
A young black bear stands on a moss-covered log, facing towards the camera with its body turned slightly across the frame. I photographed this cub in British Columbia in 2011. The colour image keeps its dark fur sharply defined against a soft yellow-green background, giving the small animal a clear presence within the woodland setting.
The log provides both a perch and a strong lower edge. Its rough bark and bright moss slope gently upward towards the right, carrying the bear’s paws above the bottom of the frame. Fine strands of fur catch the light along the cub’s back and legs. The rounded ears and pale muzzle give the face a different texture from the darker body around it.
I find the separation between the subject and the background especially useful here. The woodland behind the cub becomes broad areas of colour rather than individual branches, while the log remains detailed enough to anchor the scene. That balance lets the photograph show the bear clearly without losing the natural surface beneath it.
This was one of the more charming wildlife moments from my photographic travels. What stays with me is the cub’s compact shape and direct look, held above the textured green moss. As a colour wildlife print, the image offers a small Canadian bear portrait with warmth and fine detail. From a distance, the dark outline stands out immediately; closer viewing reveals the fur, claws and uneven bark that give the encounter its particular character.
