Winter Sun Above a Frozen Northern Ontario Lake Photograph
Bright Sunlight Over White Ice and Forested Shores
A bright sun hangs above the frozen lake, but most of the view remains cool and pale. The snow covered surface is almost unbroken, with forested shores closing in toward the distance. I was drawn to that open white space beneath a sky that still carries a clear warmth around the sun.
This Northern Ontario photograph has two very different kinds of detail. The lake is broad and simple, while the trees form a varied edge of conifers and bare branches. On the left, their dark shapes stand against the lighter sky and snowy bank. The right shore appears farther away, helping the view narrow gently toward the centre.
I enjoy the way the sunlight connects those parts without making them look alike. A warm halo sits high above the lake, while faint cloud lines cross the blue grey sky below it. The snow stays comparatively quiet, allowing the forest outline and the sun’s radiating light to remain the strongest features. There is plenty of space around both.
I took this photograph in 2013, concentrating on the relationship between winter light and the still surface of the lake. It is a landscape that can be understood through a few clear elements: sun, snow, trees and distance. For someone who enjoys northern lakes or winter nature photography, the image offers a bright view of the season, with warmth in the sky and a more restrained, cool landscape beneath it.
