Canyon De Chelly Spider Rock With Bare Tree Black and White Photography
Twisting Branches on the Rim Above Two Tall Stone Spires
The bare tree occupies the near canyon rim, its branches spreading across the lower part of this view. Beyond it, Spider Rock rises from the valley floor as two tall stone spires. I photographed the scene in Canyon de Chelly in 2008, drawn to how the close tree and distant formation could share the frame while remaining so different in scale and texture.
I like the way the foreground establishes the viewpoint. Rough rock slopes down toward the tree, and the branching trunk leads the eye into the canyon. Behind it, the spires have straighter, more substantial outlines. The layered wall on the right and darker ground below provide a setting for those vertical forms.
Black and white makes the changes in light especially clear. Pale edges stand against shaded rock, while the tree’s fine branches create a smaller pattern across the deeper view. The distant rim runs near the top of the photograph, enclosing the canyon beneath a narrow strip of sky. My eye moves between the tree and the spires, then follows the curving wall around them.
For me, the appeal is in that balance of near and far. On a wall, the photograph offers the depth of a canyon landscape with a distinct foreground detail. It would suit an interest in the American Southwest, rugged stone formations or monochrome nature photography. The tree gives the view an intimate point of entry, while Spider Rock and the surrounding walls carry the larger sense of place.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
