A Small Snow-Covered Building Beneath a Broad Mountain Slope
A small building in the middle distance gives this Norwegian winter landscape its sense of scale. I photographed it beneath a broad snow-covered mountain slope, with a loose wire fence crossing the foreground. The scene is pale and subdued, but those few marks of everyday use keep it from becoming an empty study of snow.
I like the fence’s uneven line. Its posts lean at different angles, and the wire dips across patches of exposed grass. Close to the camera, the snow has texture and small interruptions rather than a perfectly smooth surface. Those details give the eye somewhere to begin before moving towards the open field and the building beyond.
The mountain occupies much of the left side, its dark rock emerging through the white cover. Farther back, the slopes soften into the grey sky. A narrow band of dark water cuts across the middle distance, separating the snowy ground from the mountain’s base. I kept the composition horizontal so that those layers could extend naturally through the view.
The restrained colour is part of what drew me to the scene. Grey, white and faint earth tones hold together without a dramatic burst of light. As a print, it offers a quiet winter atmosphere for a living room or a retreat with natural materials. For me, the photograph is most compelling in the difference between the rough fence nearby and the immense slope beyond, connected by a small building that is easy to overlook at first.
