Rough Ice Descending Between Steep Mountain Walls

The glacier fills the view with broken lines and pale ridges. High above, a smoother snowfield sits between the peaks; lower down, the ice becomes rougher and more intricate as it descends through the mountain basin. A sheer dark rock face on the right gives that bright surface a strong boundary.

I like the different textures within the ice. Some areas form long grooves, while others look fractured into smaller pieces. Dark mountain walls edge the scene on the left, and a band of trees appears near the lower right, giving a useful sense of scale. The small amount of sky at the top leaves most of the photograph devoted to the glacier and the rock around it.

I photographed this Canadian mountain landscape in 2011. In black and white, the snow, ice and stone remain distinct even where they overlap. The smoother upper snowfield makes the lower glacier seem more detailed, and the dark vertical face contrasts with the downward movement of the pale ridges. That relationship is what keeps the composition clear despite the amount of texture.
