Martial Mountains Snow and Rock Colour Landscape Photography
Snow Covered Ridges North of Ushuaia Beneath Cloud
Snow runs across the Martial Mountains in broad bright areas, leaving darker bands of exposed rock between them. I made this photograph north of Ushuaia, Argentina, while exploring the mountain landscape. A pointed summit rises left of centre, with several lower and sharper forms continuing across the view. The snow ties those separate outlines together without concealing all the detail of the slopes.
The nearer ridge occupies much of the photograph. Its rock faces break through the white in uneven lines, while smoother stretches of snow fill the hollows between them. I was interested in the way those differences make the terrain readable: a steep face here, a softer slope farther along, and a darker peak beyond. The colour is restrained rather than absent. Muted rock tones and cooler distant mountains sit beneath a pale sky, with grey cloud bands passing above the ridgeline.
I kept the view directed across the mountains, without including the city below or a separate foreground of trees. That allows the changing shapes of the ridge to remain the main subject. Looking at the photograph, I follow the snow first and then the darker edges that interrupt it. The scene has a large scale, but its character also comes from those smaller changes across the surface. I wanted to preserve both: the connected mountain skyline and the particular pattern of snow and stone that gave this view its shape.
