A Small Rural Hut Beside Snow Laden Evergreens
The fishing hut is small beside the trees around it. Snow covers its roof and the open field in front, while tall evergreens hold layers of white along their branches. A pale frozen creek curves across the foreground, giving the otherwise still landscape a line to follow.
I photographed this Haliburton Highlands scene in 2005. The hut sits near the left side of the clearing, among a few scattered rural objects and lengths of wood. Those modest details keep the landscape connected to everyday life. They also make the size of the surrounding trees easier to appreciate, from the slimmer evergreen near the centre to the fuller one on the right.
The snow makes the bare branches especially clear. Fine white lines spread through the woodland behind, contrasting with the heavier shapes of the evergreens. In black and white, the hut becomes a darker note within that pale setting. I like the way the open foreground gives the more intricate trees and small building room to stand out.
This winter wall art brings a quiet rural view of Ontario into a cottage, bedroom or living room. Its gentle greys can work with natural wood and simple furnishings, and the hut offers a small point of interest within the larger snowy landscape.
