Haliburton Maple Tree and Treehouse Black and White Print
A Wooden Ladder Leads into the Broad Maple Canopy
A small treehouse is almost hidden inside this broad maple tree in Haliburton County, Ontario. Its ladder rests against the trunk, leading up into the branches while the canopy spreads across an open field. I photographed the scene in black and white, letting the tree’s shape and the modest wooden structure carry the image.
The maple stands apart from the distant treeline, with room around it to show the full reach of its limbs. Pale sky separates the finer branches near the top, and the leaves gather into varied grey textures below. At the centre, the treehouse breaks the natural pattern with a few straight edges. You might notice the large tree first and discover the ladder a moment later.
I made this photograph in 2007. What appeals to me is the scale of the two subjects: the tree is substantial, while the little structure seems tucked into a place it can borrow. The view brings to mind the simple appeal of climbing up, finding a perch and looking out. Those associations belong to the image without needing a story about who built or used the treehouse.
As wall art, it can bring a gentle sense of nostalgia to a cottage, reading nook or living room. The monochrome treatment pairs naturally with wood and other quiet textures. For someone who loves Ontario’s rural places or remembers afternoons around a favourite tree, this is a photograph with a small invitation waiting among the branches.
