Dark Coastal Boulders Beneath a Pale Antarctic Sky
The rocks give this Antarctic shoreline its weight. Large, rounded boulders fill the foreground, with snow and broken ice tucked into the spaces between them. Beyond that rough edge, a strip of open water separates the shore from distant white mountains. I kept their cooler, quieter colours against the dark stone.
My eye moves along the cracks in the nearest boulder before finding the smaller rocks at the waterline. Those marks matter as much as the mountain peaks. They give the photograph something close and tangible to hold onto, while the snowfields across the water open the view into a much larger landscape.
The sea brings another texture into the composition. Its small ripples and narrow bands of light sit between the solid shapes on either side. Overhead, layered cloud softens the sky without hiding the pointed summits. There is no single dramatic burst of colour here; the interest lies in the restrained greys, pale blues, and white.
I wanted the foreground to remain a substantial part of the scene. Antarctica can draw all our attention toward its distant ice and mountains, but this view begins with the stone at the shore. As wall art, it offers a grounded coastal landscape whose details become clearer with time: a seam in a rock, a pocket of snow, or a small stretch of water catching the light.
