Bright Grass Below Layered Evergreen Branches and Bare Limbs
A bright strip of grass runs along the edge of this Haliburton forest. I made the photograph while exploring the Ontario region on foot, paying attention to the layers of branches and the changes in green across the scene. The grass provides a lighter foreground, while the trees form a dense wall of foliage behind it.
The forest has several different textures within that close view. Full green branches overlap around pale trunks, and bare lower limbs spread out in fine, angular lines. A larger trunk left of centre gives the composition a clear upright form, with smaller trees and darker gaps continuing on either side. I like how those open branches remain visible against the living foliage: they introduce a delicate pattern within the fuller green shapes. The deeper shadows between the trees allow the nearer needles and leaves to stand apart.
My photograph concentrates on the forest’s edge, where open grass meets a much denser setting. The light green foreground gives your eye somewhere to begin before looking into the darker layers behind. For a cottage, a study or a room that welcomes natural greens, it offers a close woodland view with a calm, uncluttered lower edge. There is plenty of detail among the trees, from the pale branching lines to the variations in foliage, while the broad band of grass keeps the composition balanced.
