Abandoned California Route 66 School Black and White Photography
A Low School Building Beneath Desert Mountains and Clouds
The abandoned school sits low in this California desert view, with mountains stretching behind it and clouds filling much of the sky. I photographed the building near Route 66 from outside its fence, leaving the open ground prominent in the foreground. Its small scale within the landscape is part of what makes the scene hold my attention.
The long structure has a raised central section, dark window openings and a sign above the entrance area. Around it, sparse plants break up the pale ground. The fence runs across the view as a thin dividing line, keeping the building slightly removed from the foreground. I find that the distance allows the school and its setting to be seen together, rather than making the worn surfaces the only subject.
Behind the roofline, the mountain ridges form an uneven band. Clouds provide broader, softer shapes above them, with open areas of sky between. Black and white connects those layers through tone: pale ground below, darker mountains across the middle, and bright cloud edges higher in the frame. My photograph keeps the school within that wider arrangement. It is a view of an abandoned place with its surroundings still present, where the building’s straight edges contrast with the irregular ridges and changing cloud shapes.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
