Soft Water Falls Between Dark Basalt Columns and Rough Rock
At Aldeyjarfoss in Iceland, the roar of the waterfall and the mist on my face were as memorable as the view. This black and white photograph places the falls between dark basalt columns, with rough rocks close in the foreground. The water appears soft against the sharply textured stone surrounding it.
The main fall sits slightly left of centre, dropping through a narrow gap before spreading into the pool below. Along the opposite bank, closely spaced columns create a strong vertical pattern. Above them, the rock becomes more irregular, with broken edges and layered surfaces that carry across the frame. I wanted to include both, rather than reducing the scene to the falling water alone.
In monochrome, the pale pool draws the eye through the darker rock. Its smoother tones leave room for the fine lines of the columns to stand out. The foreground has a different kind of detail: coarse, angular surfaces that interrupt the lower edge of the water. A low band of sky stays above the gorge, keeping the emphasis on the falls and their setting.
Being there made the contrast between movement and fixed form especially clear to me. Water filled the air with sound, while the rock gave it a defined passage. The photograph brings that relationship into a quieter view. I can follow the soft fall into the pool, then return to the dense pattern of columns and the rough ground where I stood.
