A Red Eye And Spotted Back On Rippled Water

A small fish hangs from the loon’s bill as it floats on rippled water. The bird faces left, with a red eye standing out against its dark head and a patterned back extending toward the right. I photographed this moment in Haliburton County, Ontario, in 2012. The fish is a small detail, but it gives the scene its particular interest.

The loon sits low on the surface, with its pale breast meeting the water near the front of the body. Fine white lines mark its neck, and rows of pale spots cover the darker feathers along its back. I like how clearly those patterns remain visible within a setting full of reflected light. The head and bill keep a strong outline against the lighter water beyond.

Ripples spread around the bird, changing from bright silver grey to deep green. The water behind it is softer in detail, while the foreground contains longer, more distinct reflections. Those changes keep the surroundings active without competing with the loon. A small disturbance behind the body helps connect the animal to the surface it occupies.

Colour is restrained here, with the red eye providing one concentrated accent. My attention moves from that eye to the fish, then along the repeated feather markings. The photograph brings a close wildlife moment into view while keeping enough water around the bird to show its setting. For someone with a connection to Haliburton or an appreciation of Canadian lake birds, it offers a detailed portrait with a quiet sense of movement.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
