Last Light in a Farmhouse Window Beneath a Gold and Blue Sky
A bright lower window catches the last light in an old farmhouse on the Saskatchewan prairie. I photographed the farmstead in colour, keeping the house, outbuildings, and open grassland together beneath a sky changing from warm gold to deeper blue. That small point of light gives the weathered house a clear presence within the wider evening scene.
The farmhouse stands toward the left, its steep gable rising above the lower buildings spaced along the horizon. Their dark openings and rooflines remain distinct against the warm sky. A slender utility pole and fence remnants add narrower shapes between them. Grass fills the foreground in broad, uneven bands, with faint depressions leading toward the yard. Higher at the right, darker clouds gather above the fading light near the prairie edge.
I made this photograph at an abandoned farmstead in southwestern Saskatchewan in 2025. What held my attention was the brief relationship between that illuminated window and the larger band of warmth behind the buildings. I kept the view wide so the light would remain a small event within the land rather than becoming the entire subject. Colour preserves the difference between the grass, weathered wood, and evening sky, while the darker building fronts give the scene its structure. For me, the photograph holds a particular moment at the end of the day, when the farmhouse briefly catches the sun and the other structures begin to settle into shadow.
