Weathered Corner House With Street Art And Nordic Light
I remember walking through Reykjavik and stopping dead in my tracks when I saw this house. It wasn’t the kind of structure that shows up in guidebooks or postcards. It sat quietly on a corner, modest in size, almost overlooked—until you noticed the side wall. That’s where everything shifted.
One half of the building feels traditional, almost reserved, with its wooden siding, small windows, and steep roofline shaped by generations of Icelandic weather. The other half is raw and unapologetic, covered in layers of graffiti that speak to something more modern, more restless. The contrast is immediate. Clean lines meet chaos. Heritage meets expression. And somehow, it all works.
In black and white, the scene simplifies but also deepens. The textures take over. The grain of the wood, the roughness of the concrete, the layered paint of the street art—it all becomes tactile. The light cuts across the building, giving it structure and weight, while the sky above holds just enough movement to keep the scene alive. There’s a quiet tension here that I was drawn to. Nothing is staged. Nothing is perfect. It’s just real.
I photographed this while exploring Reykjavik on foot, moving slowly through neighbourhood streets rather than chasing landmarks. This is the side of a city I’m always looking for—the parts that feel lived in, not curated. Moments like this don’t announce themselves. You find them by being present, by paying attention, by letting the place reveal itself.
