Winding Winter Road Through Haliburton Village in Monochrome
Snowy Homes and Trees Follow a Curving Village Road
This is a view close to home. Haliburton, Ontario, is where I live and work, and this black and white photograph looks down over the village in winter. A curving road threads between houses, bare branches, and dark evergreens, with snow bringing the buildings and surrounding ground into a shared pale palette.
I made the photograph on one of the quieter days when I stayed nearby rather than heading farther afield. From above, a familiar part of the village became a composition of bends, rooftops, and trees. The road gives the eye a clear route through it, appearing near the lower left before turning and climbing into the distance.
Some of these homes are places I have walked past many times. Seeing them together from this angle brings out the relationship between the small buildings and the wooded landscape around them. The trees are not simply a backdrop; they separate the houses, overlap their roofs, and shape the spaces along the road.
Black and white keeps attention on that arrangement. Snow highlights the roadside curves, while darker pavement and evergreen foliage add structure. Fine bare branches fill the gaps with a lighter, more delicate pattern.
For me, the photograph holds the everyday character of Haliburton in winter. It is a lived-in village view, with enough distance to see its rhythm and enough detail to recognise the homes and road that give it scale.
