A Wagon Pause Amid the Suceava Market Activity
A farmer turns towards me from a wooden wagon at a rural market outside Suceava, Romania. His horse stands ahead of the cart, with people, vehicles and goods filling the space around them. I photographed this black and white scene while travelling through Romania with my wife, stopping at places that caught our attention along the road. The market brought an unexpected portrait into the middle of the journey.
The wagon runs diagonally through the foreground, carrying sacks and a patterned covering beneath the seated man. Reins and harness lines continue towards the horse at the right. Behind them, people stand beside vans and other vehicles, while low hills remain visible beyond the gathering. I liked keeping that activity in the frame. It places the farmer within the market rather than separating him from the work and movement that surrounded our encounter.
Afternoon light brought out the folds and worn surface of his jacket, as well as the wooden cart and its wheel. Strong shadows cross the ground below, giving the otherwise busy scene a clear structure. The monochrome treatment lets the different materials remain distinct without the colours pulling attention away from his face. For someone who enjoys documentary portraits or rural European scenes, the photograph offers several layers to explore beyond its main subject. For me, it keeps a memory of travelling together through Romania and finding this brief pause within a market that was carrying on around us.
