Layers Of Curved Roof Tiles Beneath A Golden Sky
Rows of curved tiles lead through this close view of Tuscan rooftops, from the broad roof in front to the higher gable behind. I liked the way each level changes direction, creating a layered composition within a small piece of the village. Warm golden tones bring the roofs, plaster and clouded sky into a strong shared palette.
The tiles have enough variation to remain interesting beyond their repeated pattern. Some are darker, others catch more light, and their edges form little bands of shadow. Between the roofs, walls and chimney shapes give the eye a pause before the next set of curves begins. The higher building adds brickwork and a plain window to that mixture of surfaces.
Above the gable, thin television aerials rise against the sky. They introduce finer, more angular lines into the photograph, reminding me how familiar practical additions become part of a village roofscape. A little foliage along the lower edges softens the masonry without hiding the architecture.
I made this photograph in Tuscany in 2010, choosing a view that concentrates on the roofs rather than a whole street or distant town. The image has a warm, richly coloured presentation, with its character coming from texture and overlapping shapes. For a living room, hallway or kitchen, it offers Italian architectural wall art with an earthy palette. It is especially appealing if you enjoy the small arrangements of everyday buildings that reveal themselves when you look above street level.
