Shibuya Layered Colour Graffiti Wall I Urban Photography
White Scribbles Across a Dense Field of Colour
Colour occupies every part of this Shibuya graffiti photograph. I isolated a section of a Tokyo stairwell wall where white lettering, black outlines, and small sketches cross a dense background of turquoise, pink, yellow, and orange. The result feels abstract at first, but individual marks soon begin to emerge: a face, a looping line, a fragment of a name.
The stairwell connected several floors of shops, and I was interested in the wall as a surface encountered within that ordinary passage. Moving closer changed how I saw it. From farther away, the marks merged into a busy field; within a tighter frame, their differences became the composition. Thick black strokes establish a loose framework, while the lighter writing passes over and between them. I chose this section because the larger gestures and finer marks seemed to balance each other without needing a single central subject.
I kept the photograph in colour because the overlapping paint is inseparable from its energy. Small bright patches remain visible through newer lines, and the rough surface adds another layer beneath the writing. I like that looking at the image is an active process: my eye finds one shape, follows it briefly, and then catches another. This is the first photograph in my Shibuya stairwell wall series, preserving one particular arrangement within that larger surface. For someone drawn to graffiti photography, colourful urban textures, or abstract compositions found in real places, it offers both an immediate burst of colour and details that take longer to notice.
