Balsam Fir Branch Against Blue Colour Botanical Photography
Bright Green Needles Extend Across a Soft Blue Background
A balsam fir branch reaches diagonally across this photograph, its bright green needles standing against a soft blue background. I photographed the close detail in Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands, giving the branch room to extend towards the right. The surrounding tree remains mostly outside the view, so the repeated needles and smaller branch tips become the subject.
The green changes from one section to another. Some needles catch more light and appear yellow-green, while darker areas remain visible beneath and between them. Those differences help separate the overlapping tips. I like how the longest branch provides a clear direction through the frame, with shorter sections below it creating a less regular pattern. The individual needles are fine details, but together they make a strong, recognisable shape.
The blue background is deliberately quiet in the finished photograph. Its soft shifts in brightness leave the edges of the needles clear without introducing another distinct subject. My attention stays on the relationship between the detailed green branch and the open space around it. That balance gives the image its simple botanical character: a close look at a familiar tree, with enough room to appreciate the way its smaller parts are arranged. The colour connects those fine details into one bright form across the frame.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
