St Mark’s Square Venice Night Arcade Black and White Photography

Closed Shutters and Repeated Columns Beneath Bright Lamps

A line of lamps leads deep into this covered arcade at St Mark’s Square in Venice. I photographed the passage at night, with columns along the left and closed shop shutters on the right. The view is drawn towards a narrow point in the distance, where a few small figures remain visible beneath the lights.

The patterned floor gives the image much of its movement. Dark and pale tiles form repeated diamonds, interrupted by long bands that follow the corridor. Reflections create a brighter line near the centre, connecting the closest part of the floor to the distant lamps. I find that the surface holds attention even before the eye reaches the buildings above it.

There is repetition throughout the photograph, but the two sides are different. The left has rounded columns and darker spaces between them. On the right, horizontal shutters sit within taller architectural openings, with worn surfaces on the surrounding piers. Overhead, the ceiling adds another grid that narrows with the same perspective. Together, these lines give the passage a clear structure without making every detail identical.

Black and white lets the lamp reflections and changes in surface texture stand out. I wanted the night setting to remain visible through those lights and shadows, rather than through an expanse of dark sky. The arcade fills the view, and its depth becomes the main subject. It is a close architectural look at Venice, held together by the route through the frame.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
