Sagging Roof and Open Windows Beneath Prairie Clouds

A small abandoned farmhouse sits low in tall grass beneath a broad Saskatchewan sky. I photographed it in black and white, keeping the weathered siding, damaged roof, and dark window openings clearly visible. The building’s uneven lines give the scene its character, while the clouds and foreground grass leave enough space around it to convey the openness of the prairie.

I encountered the farmhouse during my travels through southeastern Saskatchewan. Standing in the field, I was drawn to the way its roof dipped across the centre and the boards no longer followed a straight line. I positioned myself slightly lower so those irregular edges would stand against the sky. The small rooftop vent remains upright above the sagging roof, a detail that gives the structure a recognizable outline even in its deteriorated state. I included the surrounding grass because its fine, overlapping stems provide a different texture from the broad wooden boards.

Monochrome brings the darker openings forward and separates the pale roof from the sky. I can move from the larger shape of the house to the smaller details of its surface, then back out into the field around it. The uneven roofline and exposed openings keep me looking, each giving the building a different sense of balance. For someone drawn to abandoned places or rural Canadian landscapes, this photograph offers a direct look at a prairie structure whose shape is visibly changing. The open space above and around it gives those small signs of wear room to hold the viewer’s attention.
