Ordered Vine Rows Beneath a Restless Italian Sky
The rows of vines give this landscape its steady rhythm, while the clouds overhead seem to pull in several directions at once. I photographed this Tuscan vineyard in 2010 as storm clouds moved across the countryside. That change in the sky became the centre of the image: a broad, restless mass of light and dark hanging above the carefully worked hillside.
Across the lower portion, the vineyard rows run diagonally towards a small group of buildings and trees on the ridge. Their repeated lines gather the eye and lead it into the distance. A pale track cuts across the planted slopes, adding another route through the scene. I like the way these measured patterns hold their shape beneath the much looser forms of the clouds.
Black and white makes that relationship particularly clear. Bright edges in the cloud cover open into deeper grey undersides, and the darker vine rows carry that tonal movement down into the land. The hilltop buildings offer a small human scale within the larger sweep of sky and cultivation. For me, the photograph holds the feeling of a countryside moment about to change. As wall art, it brings the structure of an Italian vineyard together with a dramatic sky, with enough fine detail to reward a closer look.
