Dark Trees Reflected Beneath a Pale Smoky Sky
The sky has very little detail, and that absence changes the whole scene. Forest-fire smoke hangs over this Northern Ontario view, leaving the trees dark against a broad, pale background. I photographed the waterside woodland in 2021, recording the softened atmosphere rather than a visible wall of flame.
A line of conifers occupies the middle of the image. Their pointed crowns rise at different heights, with a few bare trunks breaking the denser groups. Along the water’s edge, a low strip of vegetation keeps the forest separate from its reflection. The trees appear again below, their shapes stretched and interrupted by the uneven surface of the water.
Working in black and white brings those relationships forward. The sky becomes a quiet field, the woodland a darker cluster, and the foreground a mixture of pale water and fine marks. I find the reflection particularly important because it gives the trees a second, less definite outline. The scene stays recognizable while its edges become less certain.
The smoke is part of the context of this photograph, but the image itself remains restrained. What I wanted to hold was the way an altered sky affects an otherwise familiar northern landscape. There is no need to make the view more dramatic than it is. Its strength lies in the dark tree line, the open water and the unusual stillness of the pale atmosphere above them.
