Venice Santa Maria della Salute Black and White Photography
A Passing Boat Beneath the Great Waterfront Dome
A small motorboat crosses the water while Santa Maria della Salute fills the opposite bank. I like the difference in scale: the boat is a brief, moving presence beneath a church that dominates this view of Venice. The black and white treatment brings both into the same grainy, softly shaded scene.
The great dome is the first shape I notice, but the building becomes more interesting as my eye drops toward the waterfront. Smaller domes, towers, arches and the detailed entrance gather into a dense arrangement of pale stone and dark openings. Above them, the sky leaves room for the silhouette to stand clearly. Below, the rippled water breaks the architecture into a less orderly surface.
I photographed this view in 2005. Rather than concentrating on an isolated architectural detail, I wanted the church and its waterside setting to remain together. The little boat helps make that relationship visible. Its wake introduces a passing movement across the foreground, giving the solid facade something lighter and less predictable beside it.
There is a softness to the grain and shaded edges that I enjoy here. It allows the photograph to feel atmospheric while keeping the church recognizable. For someone drawn to Venice, waterfront architecture or monochrome city photographs, the appeal is in that balance: an unmistakable landmark, seen through the ordinary activity of the water around it.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
