New York Pier 57 and Empire State Building Black and White Photography

Waterfront Windows Beneath a Familiar Manhattan Skyline

Pier 57 occupies the foreground of this New York waterfront photograph, with the Empire State Building rising behind it. I photographed the scene in 2015, when the large Marine and Aviation lettering was visible across the pier’s front. The water gives the building a clear base, while the taller city blocks establish the skyline beyond it.

The pier combines a broad front with a long side that recedes towards the right. Rows of windows repeat along that side, and the structure above the roof adds a finer pattern of angled lines. I find the contrast between the low waterfront building and the Empire State Building especially useful. One holds the view close to the water; the other draws the eye upwards and into the distance. Smaller buildings fill the space between them without obscuring the main shapes.

Black and white brings the window patterns and lettering forward. Light falls across the pier’s pale surfaces, while darker sections of the skyline provide separation behind it. A few small clouds interrupt the otherwise open sky, and the rippled water introduces a softer texture below. My photograph keeps those layers together rather than isolating the landmark tower. The appeal for me is in the relationship between the familiar skyline and the waterfront architecture in front of it, each retaining its own shape and scale.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
