Painted Barber Poles Around A Figure Facing Inside
Painted barber poles on either side of the entrance gave this Santa Marta scene a clear frame. I photographed the small Cuban barber shop from the street, with an older man standing near the centre, his back toward my camera. His pale shirt separates him from the darker room beyond in this black and white image.
I like the small gestures within that strong arrangement. One hand pulls lightly at the bottom of his shirt, while the other holds a cigarette. Those details keep the central figure particular rather than turning him into only a silhouette within the doorway.
The exterior is almost symmetrical, but the people and objects inside form a less orderly pattern. A bicycle, standing and seated men, and the tiled floor add layers of depth. The painted poles, handwritten hours and chipped lower walls establish the shop from outside, while the interior reveals itself more gradually.
I wanted the darker areas to retain that slower discovery. The bright walls lead inward, and the man’s shirt provides a tonal bridge between street and room. Black and white gives the worn plaster, floor pattern and human gestures a shared visual rhythm. What holds the photograph for me is the relationship between a simple, clearly framed entrance and the ordinary life visible within it. The shop remains recognisable at a glance, with smaller details continuing to emerge as I look.
