Two Travelling Chests Beneath a Gridded Paper Window

Two long carrying poles bring an unexpected direction to the stillness of this room. Resting against old travelling chests at Matsue's Samurai Residence in Japan, they extend toward the camera across the tatami. The black and white photograph sets their strong diagonals beneath the finer grid of a paper window.

Travelling chests known as hasamibako belonged to the practical world around samurai journeys. Museum records describe them as containers for the furnishings and personal equipment that attendants carried when members of a warrior household went out on official business. Their portable form connects these quiet domestic displays with life beyond the residence.

I was interested in that relationship between movement and order. The boxes are still, but the poles make their purpose easier to understand. Scuffed surfaces, fittings and lids hold traces of use in their texture, while the room around them remains spare.

The window brings a lighter pattern into the upper part of the frame. Narrow openings at its sides and bands of light across the floor prevent the geometry from becoming completely closed. What stays with me is how little the room needs to establish its character: two chests, their poles and the measured framework of wood and tatami. It has the clear, peaceful arrangement that I find so compelling in these historic Japanese interiors.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
