A Seated Samurai Figure Against the Shoji Grid

A seated samurai figure gives scale to the broad grid of paper screens behind it. This black and white photograph shows a historical display in the formal reception room at Matsue's Samurai Residence in Japan. The figure's dark clothing gathers the light into folds, with the surrounding tatami leaving the composition open.

The room is a zashiki, used by the head of the household to receive visitors. Its architecture was designed to express the formality of those encounters. The residence's guide distinguishes its carefully selected woodwork and decorative fittings from the simpler treatment of the private living rooms.

That function helps explain the sense of arrangement in this view. The low seated position brings the figure into line with the screens and floor. A vertical timber post frames one side, while the repeated rectangles behind it provide a restrained architectural background.

I love the peaceful structure of these historic Japanese homes. Here, the recreated figure helps me appreciate how the room's proportions relate to someone seated within it. I concentrated on the relationship between fabric, light and the surrounding grid, allowing the darker upper wall to give the scene room to breathe. The photograph brings together the formal purpose of the interior and the quiet order that I feel when I am in these spaces.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
