Japanese Tansu Chest in Shadow | Black and White Photography

An Iron Bound Chest Beside the Paper Screen

Light catches the chest's metal fittings before it reaches the rest of the room. At Matsue's Samurai Residence in Japan, this old storage piece stands against a plain wall, its dark drawers and hinged doors set beside the glow of a paper screen. The black and white treatment makes those changes of surface especially clear.

Tansu is the broad Japanese term used for storage chests and cabinets. Their many forms reflect different household needs; here, the visible drawers, handles and locking doors make storage the centre of the photograph. I like how an object made for practical use can also organize the whole feeling of a space.

The house itself distinguishes between formal rooms for visitors and simpler areas for private life. That distinction helps explain the restrained setting around the chest. There is generous empty wall above it, and the tatami borders extend the room's geometry across the floor.

I kept returning to the relationship between that open space and the density of the cabinet. Worn edges and patterned fittings reward a closer look, while the sliding wooden panels hold a broad field of shadow behind them. The peace I feel in these interiors comes partly from this balance: useful objects, clear structure and enough space for the light to give each one its own presence.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
