Glass Bottles and Reflections Fill the Window Shelf by Shelf
Bottle after bottle fills this Prague liquor shop window, their glass shapes repeated in the reflections behind them. The shelves keep the display in long rows, but the different necks, shoulders and labels make each row irregular. I was drawn to the density of the scene and the way a familiar shop display could become a detailed black and white photograph.
Some bottles are tall and narrow, others round or almost square. Pale labels interrupt darker glass, and highlights catch along the edges. I like how the reflected shapes make the display feel deeper than the shelves alone would suggest. A single bottle can be easy to follow, then become harder to separate from the glass around it. The shelf edges provide a few clear lines through all that detail, giving the eye a place to begin again.
I made this photograph in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2013. In monochrome, the assortment is held together by tone and shape rather than the colours of the labels. That lets the differences in glass and lettering become part of one shared pattern. As wall art, the print may suit a home bar, dining area or a space with an interest in everyday city details. It can appeal to someone who enjoys Prague street photography or the visual character of old shop windows. For me, the scene rewards a slow look: its larger rows are clear immediately, while smaller bottle shapes and reflections keep emerging within them.
