Buenos Aires Law Faculty Columns Black and White Architectural Photography
A Small Figure and Shadow Beneath Tall Fluted Stone Columns
The person near the base of the columns is a small detail, but an essential one. That figure gives the tall stonework of the University of Buenos Aires Law Faculty a human scale. I photographed this view in 2010, concentrating on a section of the facade rather than the whole building. The columns extend beyond the top of the frame, letting their repeated vertical lines carry the composition.
I like the differences within the stone surfaces. Broad blocks form the wall on the left, while the fluted columns create a finer rhythm across the centre and right. Horizontal joints interrupt those long grooves at regular intervals. Light and shadow make the relief of the stone easier to read, and the person’s dark shadow becomes another shape near the bottom. A lamp at the right edge adds a more delicate vertical line alongside the much larger columns. Black and white brings these elements together through a restrained range of greys.
For me, the photograph works through proportion: substantial architecture, a compact figure and details that emerge as you look across the surface. On a wall, it offers the strong structure of a Buenos Aires building with a quieter human presence held inside the frame. I would choose it for an interest in Argentina, classical architectural form or monochrome city photography. The small figure remains the detail I return to after following the columns, reminding me how much scale a single person can give to an image.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
