Everyday Life Along the Seawall in Late Light

The people along the seawall are what make this view of Havana feel complete to me. Across the water, Morro Castle and its lighthouse form a strong, familiar outline. Closer to the camera, figures gather above the rocky shore, bringing an everyday human scale to the harbour entrance.

I photographed the scene late in the day in 2017. I love the way people seem to return to Havana's seawall as part of the city's daily rhythm. In this frame, some sit along the curved edge while others stand on the rocks below. Their presence gives the waterfront a life that the architecture alone could not provide.

The composition moves between those different distances. Rough foreground stone leads toward the seawall, then across the water to the fortress. Clouds stretch above its long walls, and the lighthouse provides a clear vertical against the sky.

In black and white, the late light brings out the textures of rock and masonry without taking attention away from the people. Their smaller shapes remain distinct against the broad surfaces of the coast.

I wanted to hold both parts of Havana together: the recognizable harbour landmark and the ordinary pleasure of being beside the sea. The photograph is as much about the gathering along the water as the castle beyond it, with each giving the other a sense of place.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
